English teacher Treg Campbell took 11 AP English Language pupils to Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall as the 4th Annual High School Student Black History Summit unfolded on March 9th.. Established as "a strategic effort to enrich the lives of African-Americans, in Western Pennsylvania, Stop the Violence! Pittsburgh presented a riveting Black History Month program that shined a spotlight on topics as vast as the Charles "Teenie" Harris Archive (a Pittsburgh native) and the Tulsa Race Massacre.
Pittsburgh was represented with six Allegheny County schools, in attendance: Baldwin, Fox Chapel, Propel Braddock Hills, Propel Montour, Obama Academy, and Sto-Rox. Propel saw a pair of its pupils receive scholarships, and one of the pair placed fourth with respect to the Black History Month Juneteenth Essay Contest.
Representing Washington County, as its sole participating school, Washington School District swept top honors with their writers.
Sponsored by the Elsie Hilliard Hillman Foundation, Tyra Sparks-Gatling placed first receiving a $300 cash prize.
Sponsored by the American Eagle Outfitters Foundation, Sydney Kobuchi placed second receiving a $200 cash prize.
Sponsored by Carnegie Mellon University, Sophia Volper placed third receiving a $100 cash prize.
Sponsored by the Heinz Endowments, the following pupils - Anthony Adkins, Eden Day, Magdaline McCort, Savanna Mellish, Courtney Price, Julia Sandoval, Lucy Slesh, and Adele Zimmerman - received $25 in cash.
